Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
Refers to heart, stroke and blood vessel disease. These conditions have similar causes, mechanisms, and treatments. The underlying cause of most CVD is a gradual clogging of the arteries that supply blood to the heart, brain and other vitals organs.
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)
It is when the coronary arteries (arteries that supply the heart with oxygen) become clogged; the flow of blood is reduced and the heart may not be able to meet the demands placed on it to pump harder e.g. during exercise. CHD can lead to angina or heart attack.
Symptoms of heart disease vary according to the type of heart disease. Unfortunately, some heart disease causes no symptoms in the early stages. When symptoms occur, they vary from person to person. Symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness and fatigue, palpitations (the sensation of the heart beating in the chest), light-headedness, and fainting, or a feeling of being about to faint.
Some forms of heart disease can be prevented. To prevent coronary heart disease, you must exercise consistently, have a low salt and low fat diet, restrain from smoking and lose weight. A healthy diet is a cornerstone in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Especially if you have high risk factors such as:
• chest discomfort
• smoking
• stress
• diabetes
• overweight
• high blood pressure
• breathlessness
• high cholesterol
• family history of heart problems
